Abeego: Reusable Beeswax Wrap That Breathes

A few months ago we met an amazing woman at a business conference who, as it turns out, is also in the business of helping people stay healthy through eating real food.

We immediately loved Toni Desrosiers, founder of Abeego, because her passion for keeping real food alive was palpable. As advocates of raw and living food, you can imagine that we hit it off right away.

Founded in 2008, Toni realized what an absolutely ludicrous idea it was to wrap food in plastic and expect it to still be good a day or two later. If you really stop to think about it, the whole plastic wrap thing makes no sense.

Beeswax wrap, on the other hand, breathes. So Toni founded Abeego under the principle that if living food needed to be wrapped in airtight wrap, the rind, peel or skin would be airtight, but it’s not.

Today we want to share with you our new love – Abeego Beeswax Wrap, as well as an inspiring interview from the founder.

When you keep your food alive, you will get more out of it. This is the future of food wrap. Enjoy and be on the lookout on social media in the upcoming weeks for a fun giveaway!

With living food love,

Interview with Toni Desrosiers, founder of Abeego

1. We love your products!! But admittedly when we first saw Abeego, we weren’t sure about the different ways to use it. Can you tell us more?

Abeego is often love at first sight! We’ve been stuck in an uninspiring relationship with plastic for so long that Abeego hits you at the core and when you discover its fullest capabilities the love deepens to that lifelong, let’s grow old together kind of love. So let me help you foster that love!

The founding principle of Abeego is that it was designed to Keep Food Alive. Abeego picks up where the peel leaves off. Our beeswax wrap protects food from air and moisture and light and lets it breathe just like nature’s lemon peel, onion skin, and cheese rind. Basically, we’ve replicated the way nature keeps your food fresh! These unique qualities make Abeego the perfect companion for all your fresh living food because when it’s wrapped in Abeego it won’t sweat, rot and suffocate like it will in airtight wrap.

Here are some things to wrap in Abeego:

  • Herbs: Combine herbs if you have one wrap & two herbs (ie: parsley & cilantro or thyme & rosemary)
  • Half cut fruit and vegetables: You need it for your half lemon. Trust us! It’s a life changer.
  • Covering that huge salad all week!
  • Wrap and keep carrots, celery, broccoli & cauliflower crisp
  • Create snack packs of fresh vegetables

The second thing you need to understand about Abeego is that it’s a conscious food wrap. That’s right! You can take what you’ve learned on the cleanse and apply it to your food wrap. Your fresh food is alive! You need to get to know what your foods needs in order to save it longer. For example, did you know tomatoes hate the fridge? That’s right, it’s too cold for them and they loose their flavor. Never put your tomatoes in the fridge unless you have a half cut wrapped in Abeego. If you want to learn how to Keep Food Alive follow us! We’re working hard at getting you up to speed.

2. Why did you start Abeego?

Before I invented Abeego I was a holistic nutritionist on a mission to share the message of wholehearted wellness. One day I opened my fridge and saw piles of fresh living food trapped in airtight plastic wrap and plastic bags. It occurred to me that if I can’t live inside an airtight plastic wrap how could I expect my living food to stay alive and provide me with its optimal nutritional value. This realization triggered the idea to reinvent food wrap to reflect the way nature stores our food and once the idea was seeded it held on and didn’t let go until I invented Abeego!

3. We know that you’re a badass women entrepreneur. We’d love our readers to know about your path…and some new major accomplishments.

It’s been nine years of hard work and every single decision I’ve made is contributing to the exponential growth we’re experiencing. Abeego started as an idea cooked up in my kitchen and now you can find it in thousands of stores worldwide. My hard work and entrepreneurialism has been recognized multiple times. I’ve been recognized as Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Innovator of the Year and won a spot as a 2015 SheEO Venture, which resulted in funding and mentorship from over 500 racially generous women. In 2017, I pitched on the Dragons’ Den (the Canadian Shark Tank for our US friends) and landed a double deal. Abeego is taking off and running this company is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done!

4. If one of our cleansers wanted to try Abeego, what products would you suggest they start with?

Well right now, I’m in the middle of my cleanse so I can look into my fridge and see exactly what I’m wrapping in Abeego!

Here’s what is in my fridge and the size of the Abeego wrap I’m using:

  • Wrapping a few half cuts of lemon, avocado, apple and lime (4 small wraps)
  • Covering a bowl of chia pudding and a fresh berry and mint salad (2 medium wraps)
  • A bunch of carrots and a large green salad (2 large)
  • A head of celery, 1 bunch of cilantro and 2 bunches of parsley (2 giant)

We’re LOVING the mango and parsley salad in our house!

So, if you are ready to dive in I suggest getting 1 small, 1 medium, 1 large and 1 giant wrap. If you want to test Abeego start with 1 Variety Wrap and 1 Giant. We always offer free shipping so it’s easy to stock up!

5. We love that you walk your walk about health and nutrition and most recently you did the Conscious Cleanse. Tell us the everything! How will you take the cleanse into your life?

My intention for 2017 was to find my Sparkle. After years of sacrificing my own health for the wellbeing of my business and my family I found myself feeling dull, lifeless and drained. When I met Jo and learned about her mission to help her cleansers feel vibrant I knew I had to work with her and Jules to get my Sparkle back.

I loved the Conscious Cleanse and the nurturing, positive approach of Jo, Jules and their team allowed me to uncover the buried holistic nutritionist inside me! Their approach to cleansing allowed me to reflect on why I eat what I eat rather than simply monitoring what I put in my mouth. I discovered a few things about my body and my mind.

On the body side, I discovered how badly salt bloats me! I wouldn’t have connected the two in the past if it hadn’t been for the cleanse since I’m a bit of a salt-a-holic. For a week I ate all fresh food with a bit of salt here and there and then on the fateful night in question I ate baked chicken crusted in salt. Within 30 minutes of the meal I was forced to get out of my jeans and into something less restricting.

On the mind side, I realized I’m a stress eater. When I feel anxious, nervous or overwhelmed I immediately start putting food in my mouth unconsciously. Even though it was all healthy food the act of eating until I was stuffed was not addressing my mental health. The love notes from Jo and Jules helped me identify my bingeing habit and the feeling behind it. I’m working toward finding new ways to process stress and anxiety now.

I’m sticking with the cleanse for a few more weeks. I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface with how good I could feel. I have more energy, I’m sleeping better, I’m less cranky and I feel more productive. All in all the Conscious Cleanse it a total win!

6. What’s your favorite health hack? What do you do to stay healthy in your life?

My favorite health hack recipe is a homemade Orange Julius! We did an event where we were left with 300 mini tangerines and that meant giving them a purpose before they became compost. I peeled and froze all of them and when my family is craving a creamy, sweet treat I blend a few up with almond milk, a dash of vanilla and a bit of maple syrup. It’s actually the number one treat I missed during the cleanse! Yum!

Abeego keeps me busy and finding time to stay physically active often gets overlooked unless I’m working toward a tangible result. Growing food has become my health saviour. Tending my fresh food slows my mind down, helps me destress, moves my body and feeds my family.

I love the idea and bought the 3 medium wraps. One is bunching up if that makes sense. As in the beeswax is pilling. Maybe I am washing them wrong. I love them, just want to use them correctly and find a place to get more. Thank you🙂
