We’re nearing the halfway point of our Spring cleanse, so we’ve been thinking a lot about this season and its spirit of growth and renewal. In our world, we associate renewal with detox. So today we’re sharing this powerful Liver Detox Smoothie to help you give your body a little tune up and prep for warmer temperatures.
Spring is a great time to support your body’s natural detox channels – the weather is getting warmer, our bodies are emerging out of hibernation mode, and those pesky spring allergies are starting to rear their ugly heads. Focusing on detox now can help reduce the inflammation associated with spring allergies and shake off any lingering winter blues.
You’ve probably heard the term “liver detox” thrown around, but what is it really? In reality, what you’re doing is supporting your detox pathways. This includes your liver, kidneys, colon, and lymphatic system. During liver detox, you support your liver by reducing stressors like food or toxins and boost essential nutrients that help the liver do its job.
How can you support detox? By reducing some of your typical stressors like caffeine, alcohol, or sugar and adding in lots of bitter greens, sour or enzyme-rich fruits, and powerhouse fresh herbs.
That’s why we created a Liver Detox Smoothie that combines several liver-supporting ingredients to help you give your body’s detox a boost. This smoothie is a winning (and delicious!) combination of all of the above (plus a little extra)!
Dandelion greens are the real star of this smoothie show. They’re a bitter green that’s often overlooked, but is truly a detox powerhouse. Bitter greens in general are fantastic for liver detox and bile production. These greens have been shown to prevent liver damage AND they’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols to bust inflammation.
For some sweetness and enzyme benefits, we added pineapple. Pineapple is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that boasts amazing anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also great for aiding digestion, another piece of the detox puzzle.
And we couldn’t make a detox smoothie without our favorite herb: cilantro. Cilantro also stimulates bile production, helping the liver more effectively flush out any toxins that are hanging around.
Last but not least, we tossed in avocado and cinnamon to help keep your blood sugar in check. Balancing your blood sugar is key for liver detox because when there’s too much glucose in your bloodstream it turns into fat cells, which are stored in the liver. Over time, this buildup can slow down your liver function and even lead to fatty liver disease.

Liver Detox Smoothie
Yield: 1 quart
Ingredients:
- 2 cups nut milk
- ½-1 cup pineapple
- ½ ripe avocado
- 1 handful spinach
- 1 handful dandelion greens
- ½ cup cilantro, stems included!
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp hemp seeds
Instructions:
In a high-speed blender, combine nut milk, pineapple, avocado, spinach, dandelion greens, cilantro, cinnamon, and hemp seeds until smooth.
