Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie

Heavy Metals. We’re not talking about Def Leppard or Metallica today, ladies and gentlemen!

We’re talking about toxic heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, copper, cadmium, nickel, arsenic, and lead, that we’re all exposed to on a daily basis.

How are we exposed? Surprisingly we come into contact with heavy metals in everyday life – through the air we breathe (think vehicle emissions and other environmental pollutants), in the food we eat (non-organic foods that have been treated with pesticides and herbicides), if you have dental fillings made from mercury-containing amalgam, and certain types of large fish (such as king mackerel, swordfish, orange roughy, marlin, tuna steaks, and canned ‘white’ albacore).

Symptoms of heavy metal toxicity include chronic fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, migraine headaches, joint pain, and insomnia, just to name a few. They can also make us more susceptible to infections and lead to serious neurological disorders if left untreated.

The good news here is that you can start cleansing your body of heavy metals starting today simply by incorporating a few prized superfoods into your diet.

Spirulina: Having a small dose of this superfood a few times a week can help to rid your system, specifically your nervous system, brain, and liver, of heavy metals. Look for organic if possible.

Cilantro: A handful of cilantro is a superstar to help rid your body of mercury and is easy to add to a few meals a day.

Wild Blueberries: Wild Blueberries help to draw heavy metals out of your brain tissue. Their potent antioxidants help reverse any damage caused by heavy metal poisoning.

Atlantic Dulse: Dulse helps remove heavy metals from the digestive tract and gut (we all know gut health is imperative to overall health!) including lead, nickel, copper, cadmium, and aluminum. It binds to these metals with a strong grip and does not let go until it frees from the body.

Below is one of our new favorite smoothie recipes whose ingredients will bind to the heavy metals in our bodies and make sure that they’re flushed out of the body smoothly.

I’ve made this twice and like it. The 2nd time I used a whole lemon (“if some is good, more is better…”) however, it was very sour!! lol. I learned my lesson and will follow the recipes as written. Love you two!!

That’s great that you are experimenting, Jenny! We’ve definitely made that mistake before. Pucker-face smoothies are quite the way to wake you up in the morning. XO, Jo & Jules

I know I’m probably the only one obsessed with this smoothie, but even without coconut water and the lemon, it’s great. I usually use two bunches of organic cilantro and some coconut oil, and even cilantro-neutral folks like this smoothie, particularly the “floral” notes given by the pear. Love this!!

We are so glad you love this one, Jenny! We love it that you are tweaking it to fit your taste. Thanks for sharing! XO, Jo & Jules

How often would you recommend drinking this?

    • Jo and Jules

Hi J, You can drink this smoothie anytime but 3 to 4 times a weeks is great! XO, J&J

Thank you! Sorry another question. I don’t have much time in the mornings. If I were to batch make 3 days worth would they keep ok if stored in the fridge?

        • Jo and Jules

Hi J, Great question! Making smoothies two days in advance usually works well, three days in advance tends to be a bit too long. We recommend no longer than two days. Continue to reach out if you have any other questions. XO, J&J

I am “cilantro adverse” (I’m one of those people for whom it tastes terrible)! Is there another herb/green I can substitute?

    • Jo and Jules

Hi Christine, We completely understand! Though cilantro is the best herb for heavy metal detoxification, basil is great at promoting general detoxification of the liver so it will be extremely beneficial. We haven’t tried it yet, but basil will probably be very tasty in this smoothie. If you give it a try, let us know what you think. XO, J&J

Would you consider this to be a meal or a snack?

    • Jo and Jules

Hi Me, Great question! We typically will drink it as a meal for breakfast or as snack after a workout. As a 32oz smoothie, it can be pretty filling but if you’re hungry a few hours after drinking it, definitely eat. We do not believe in calorie restrictions when you’re eating healthy whole foods. XO, J&J

Where do you get frozen “wild” blueberries?
Can I use the regular frozen blueberries I have ? Thanks

  • Sjaf

is this the same as the heavy metal detox from medical medium?

    • Jo and Jules

Hi Sjaf, It maybe similar to the Medical Medium’s but it’s not the same. We chose ingredients that are highly detoxifying and are great at removing heavy metals so there could be very similar ingredients. Thank you for reaching out. XO, J&J

I have been having trouble with not getting a feeling to go to the bathroom ( there is water in my bladder and I don’t get a feeling to go)
    Can you help me??

  • Norma dominguez

Can you use frozen Cilantro if you don’t have fresh?

    • Jo and Jules

Hi Norma, Great question. Absolutely! Smoothies are great for taking advantage of frozen fruits and veggies and it will not compromise the flavor or nutritional value. We hope you enjoy it! XO, J&J
